At PhP 880, CD-R King’s ADSL kit is the cheapest modem/wifi router you can find in any store right now. Problem is, it won’t work out of the box for most people.
This post will explain how I replaced my PLDT DSL modem + D-Link wifi router setup with this unbelievably cheap device.
Overview
As mentioned in my original post on the device, CD-R King’s ADSL kit is actually a ZyXEL P-660HW-61 modem/wifi router. It is a bit outdated, leaving me to believe that CD-R King was able to get a hold of a large surplus of this device from Telefonica’s Chinese contractor at a dirt-cheap price.
The problem with this device is that people might think it’s a wifi router. It’s not… well technically. It doesn’t have an ethernet port at the back for connecting to another router, instead it has a phone jack for DSL.
That’s right, it’s primarily a modem. The 4-port router and 802.11g wifi was just added to make this an all-in-one package. People buying this modem thinking it is a router are going to be pissed.
On the other hand, people buying this modem thinking it would work out of the box with their DSL will be surprised to find out that it doesn’t. The default settings are for Telefonica, a Spanish ISP. I’ll be discussing below how to change the settings to work with PLDT myDSL.
Make the device work for PLDT myDSL
Before you can connect to the modem, you must set your computer’s IP address as static and use the modem as the default gateway. This can be done by going to the Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click ethernet connection -> Properties / General Tab -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties.
For Vista users, use Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> View network status and tasks -> Manage network connections -> right click ethernet connection -> Properties / General Tab -> select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) -> Properties.
Follow the settings above. Connect the modem to your computer afterwards.
There are two things that prevent you from using the modem with your DSL connection. First is the WAN settings. To change this, go to http://192.168.1.1/. The password should be 1234.
Go to Advanced Setup / WAN -> WAN Setup. Use the settings above if you’re in Metro Manila and are using the new IPDSLAM network. Provincial users might have to change their VCI to 35. If you’re still using the old PPPoE network, change the encapsulation to PPPoE and add your credentials.
If you’ve seen the settings for the ZyXEL modem provided by PLDT, you might find it weird that we’re using ENET ENCAP here instead of RFC 1483. I also personally find it weird–I don’t know why the latter doesn’t work with the P-660HW-61.
Anyway, we’re not done yet. Open your command prompt (PuTTy is fine too) and telnet to the modem via
telnet 192.168.1.1
Enter 1234 as password. Now let’s open the command interpreter mode.
Enter Menu Selection Number: 24
Enter Menu Selection Number: 8
ras> wan adsl opencmd adsl2+
This will now enable ADSL2+ in your modem.
Revert your network settings back to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and restart the modem. You should now be able to connect to the internet.
If you want to change your router’s settings, you can open 192.168.1.1 in your browser (no need for static IP address because you’ve already set the modem to “router” mode). The port forwarding settings are weird so I suggest you go to PortForward.com for more information.

There you go, a working modem/wifi router at a third (fourth? fifth?) of the cost.

just for sharing: i bought this kind of adsl router last Monday, (KIT ADSL) from cdr king, ginamit ko sya as WIFI router sa loob ng bahay namin, eto ang connections ko:meron akong globe landline na may 2 mb internet speed, at merong Prolink router with 4 ports ethernet, isinaksak ko sa ethernet port 1 ng KIT ADSL yung RJ45 coming from prolink wifi and presto! may internet na from ethernet port 2,3 and 4 from KIT ADSL ROUTER, then I configured the wireless lan of KIT ADSL ROUTER and presto again….napagana ko ang WIFI ng KIT ADSL ROUTER, as of now, gamitgamit ko yung KIT ADSL ROUTER sa loob ng bahay namin using my laptop and its wireless, thanks dito sa very cheap wifi adsl router na to…. imagine, its only 880.00.
sa simula is napagana ko siya, pero nang binago ko ang settings ng lan just for curiosity at saka binalik uli hindi na nag ilaw yung dsl at di na rin ako makakunekta sa internet, so far ang lan is ok naka pagcommunicate naman sa ibang pc ko. nag try ako sa procedure ulit pero ayaw pa rin makapag connect sa net.
